Currently? We're in an absolutely gorgeous public park/county run campground in northern Alabama. We made it to Alabama y'all!!!
The sunset last night, our first night here... stunning! We were not up early enough, and it was storming anyhow, so we missed the sunrise today.
So what happened between southern Indiana and here?
The videos will go more in depth and catch you up, but here's the somewhat condensed version:
Leaving Indiana, was a cool, grey day, but that makes travel easier on Brunilda (the van).
We stopped for breakfast, stopped a few times to stretch. Then overnighted at about the midway point between there and home base.
KY really is beautiful too...
The KFC museum in Corbin was a stop the next day, unplanned but it really was neat, there will be a video about this in the coming weeks. Neither of us are big on KFC, except those mashed potatoes and gravy, and it wasn't a go-to for either of our families growing up. But it was on the way, and we had never stopped before, so we thought why not? I'm glad we did. It was cool, and we both had fun looking at all the old ads, and other memorabilia.
That was followed by a quick 2 day camp at
Warriors' Path to 1) take showers, and 2) go to my doctors appt.
It rained the entire 2 days, and was a bit cooler than it had been earlier in the week, but we still enjoyed some time outdoors, and then we moved on...
Mini Review-
The camp store was hard to catch open, as they are low on staff. Eventually we figured out it was open on the half hour every hour for a few minutes. Everyone was super friendly, and because it was raining, and still the off season it wasn't very busy.
Everything was good at the doctor by the way, so were in the clear until July's scan.
Nothing like cold pizza dinner in a Cracker Barrel parking lot in Knoxville. After my appointment. we hit the storage unit, swapped out some clothing, and other items, and hit the road.
Shout out to CB. They were the sweetest the next morning, and we were able to dump our trash, use the bathroom, get ice, and some coffee. It probably helped that there was only maybe 2 other overnighters (us, another van, and a man in a older Buick) and that we were up and out of there by 7:15am.
We've already stayed at a few more CB locations.. Lebanon, TN- that one has an RV lot. Quiet, good nights sleep, and PACKED. Everyone was packing up or gone by 7:30am though. And another in Franklin, TN...
We thought these only existed much farther west. There's a YouTube channel we watch and the guy really loves Whataburger, so we ditched our picnic lunch plan when we came across this.
It was good, and for how crazy busy they were it was pretty clean, and fast. Not anything I'd rave about, but for a fast food burger it was better than most, and priced about the same.
So, at this point we're in:
Middle TN. Lebanon to be more exact.
There won't be a video on this state park, even though we spent 3+ days, and 2 nights here.
Most of that was just relaxing, and catching up on chores. Like laundry, the state parks are far cheaper than any laundromat.
We did do quite a bit of bird and squirrel watching, and we did see a small snake, we walked a few trails, and then just chilled, and charged all our electronics.
The spots here were huge, and the park and it's history are neat, but so much of it was closed. Either for renovation, or seasonally.
Only one of three campgrounds were open, two of them being under renovation... looked like plumbing and electrical to us. So that left the remaining one pretty busy, however everyone was pretty quiet, and stuck to themselves. Not near as friendly as other places we've stayed.
The Nature Center and any other buildings and programs, as well as the cave were also closed.
However both the Park Office and Camp Store were open daily, all day.
After our stay there we meandered through Murfreesboro, stopped for groceries, checked out a very high end shopping district, and continued on to downtown Franklin.
Everything from our brief, but jam packed trip through Franklin is on Chris' phone, and he's currently out taking pictures and video of the boats/fishermen/river. That evening we walked around Franklin, and took a ghost tour. It was nice, and very history fact based, but not as good as the one we had done previously. We spent that night in.... Cracker Barrel parking lot. The next morning we hit up Planet Fitness, to shower and stretch (especially our backs). We spent the rest of the morning at
The Factory, mainly killing time. It was crazy busy but we didn't get the reason. Just not our scene I suppose. We ate a quick snack then toured both
Carnton and
Carter House. We walked the grounds at both places, stopped at a few parks and battlefields, ate an early dinner, and decided to move on.
We headed towards Alabama on I 65 with no real plan, and of course the Welcome Center was closed (under construction)! This is also the state travel guide we tried to order 3 times, yet never showed up. So, we did what we do best... found the first exit with actual "stuff" and pulled off. Just so happens this is where the Welcome Center was moved to temporarily, and we missed it being open by an hour. We explored the area a little bit on our own, had dinner, sat in Wendy's for quit a while planning our next move(s) before then headed down the street and again- spent the night at the ole CB.
The next morning we had breakfast, charged our phones, and as soon as it opened visited the Welcome Center. They were apologetic about the travel guide and we all got a little chuckle out of Alabama maybe not wanting tourists. (Adamantly not the case according to the staff.) This was yesterday. After our talks with the staff, and a brief planning session out in the van we decided to stay here for the next week. Yesterday we got set up, did the grocery/supply run, checked out a few local shops, and came on back to the campground to enjoy the quiet and the scenery. If we're honest with ourselves, we were wore out after Franklin.
Today, we finished set up (mostly the canopy and our cooking station) and we catch up on work. It's cool and partly cloudy, perfect for working outside. The river is peaceful, and we're doing our thing. I'm writing this, Chris is doing some photography. He was editing, but needed a break from the screen. In the coming days we'll venture back out into Athens and Huntsville. Then? Who knows!
Thanks,
The Outlands
