What it really takes to hit the road with Wildebeest
Hey friends! Amanda here — and today we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how we prep for a travel day in our 1990 Ford E350 shuttle bus conversion, Wildebeest. It’s not quite as easy as turning the key and heading out (though we wish it was). Every travel day takes some planning, packing, and patience — but we’ve got a routine down that works for us.
✨ The Night Before
We like to keep our travel mornings as stress-free as possible. That means starting the prep the night before:
๐งบ Tidy Up
-
We hand-wash dishes, put away laundry, and make sure anything loose is packed or secured. Amanda clears craft projects and books, Chris puts away tech gear.
๐ง Route Planning
-
Amanda dives into maps, apps, and notes like the GPS queen she is — checking for low bridges, construction, road closures, and whether there’s a good spot for fuel or a fun roadside stop.
-
She also confirms where we’re headed and how long we’re staying (if we even know!).
๐ Power Check
-
Since we’re not hooking up to water or sewer, we make sure batteries are charged and propane levels are good.
☀️ The Morning Of
With coffee in hand and the sun peeking over the trees, it’s go time!
๐งฝ Interior Sweep
-
Amanda gives Wildebeest a final once-over: locking drawers, latching the fridge, securing anything that might shift on the road.
๐ฑ Nav & Notes
-
Amanda loads the GPS, triple-checks the route, and calls out any weird turns or traffic to Chris before we even hit the road. She’s also in charge of all the fun pit stops along the way.
๐ฆ️ Weather Check
-
No water tank to fill or dump, but we do need to know what we’re driving into. Wind, rain, or intense heat can change our departure time or even the route.
๐ ️ Outside Checklist (Chris’s Domain)
Since we’re off-grid in Wildebeest:
-
Chris makes sure everything stored outside is locked up tight — tool bins, solar panels if they’re stowed, and camp chairs.
-
He walks around Wildebeest for a quick safety check: tires, lights, and mirrors all get a once-over.
๐ Rolling Out
Chris takes the wheel, Amanda rides shotgun with the GPS, snacks, and playlist ready.
We usually hit the road with:
๐ถ Music or a podcast
๐ท A social media “See ya later!” from Amanda
๐ A few quirky stops planned — because Amanda never lets us miss a world’s largest anything!
๐ณ Post-Arrival Ritual
When we land:
-
Park and level (or at least aim for not-rolling-away)
-
Pop the door open and let the breeze in
-
Chris gets started on food
-
Amanda shares a “We Made It!” moment with our followers and takes a quick video tour of the new spot
Then? We breathe.
๐งก Our Best Travel Day Tips
-
Prep in stages – Trying to do it all at once = stress.
-
Know your roles – Chris handles gear and safety. Amanda manages routes, timing, and vibes.
-
Expect the unexpected – Wrong turns, surprise storms, or road closures? It’s all part of the adventure.
-
Reward yourselves – A cold drink, a walk around the new campground, or just feet up on the dash.
Travel days in Wildebeest are rarely perfect, but they’re always a part of the story — and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Stay safe, plan smart, and don’t forget snacks.
– Amanda & Chris
