Behind the Scroll: The Real Life of Social Media on the Road
📱Behind the Scroll: The Real Life of Social Media on the Road
Hey friends! It’s Amanda (with some Chris input, of course), here to pull back the curtain on a side of Outland Adventures we don’t always show: the behind-the-scenes of our social media life.
You’ve seen the reels. The campground sunsets. The aesthetic coffee setups. The goofy RV fails and the quiet morning views.
But what you don’t always see is… well, the chaos it takes to get those clips.
Creating content while living full-time in a 1990 shuttle bus isn’t just fun — it’s also hilarious, exhausting, and 100% real. So here it is: the truth behind the scroll.
🎥 We Don’t Wake Up With a Camera in Our Face
Despite what perfectly-lit morning reels would have you believe, we don’t wake up and immediately grab a camera. Most mornings start with:
-
Chris stumbling toward the coffee like a sleep-deprived raccoon.
-
Amanda checking messages with one eye open.
-
A 10-minute debate about whether breakfast counts as work if we film it.
Then we remember, “Oh yeah — we’re trying to post more this week.”
Cue the scramble for tripods, microphones, and a clean shirt. (Spoiler: We always forget the mics.)
📸 The “Aesthetic Shot” Usually Has a Pile of Dishes Just Off Frame
Yes, we love a good campfire dinner photo. But we’re also usually hiding:
-
The half-dried laundry in the background
-
Wildebeest’s slightly dusty dashboard
-
A propane canister that always insists on being in the shot
We’ve mastered the art of cropping, zooming, and turning the nice side of our mugs toward the camera.
💬 Engaging Daily Isn’t Just a Job — It’s a Connection
Amanda handles our social media accounts — the comments, messages, posts, hashtags, and more. And she genuinely loves connecting with fellow travelers, RVers, makers, and dreamers.
But it’s not always easy.
Some days the Wi-Fi is trash.
Some days the algorithm is a gremlin.
Some days you work for 3 hours on a reel… and it flops.
But then someone messages to say, “Your post helped me take the leap,” or “We booked that campground because of you!”
That’s why we keep sharing.
🧰 Chris is the Editor, Tech Guy & Occasional Instagram Husband
Chris does a ton of the behind-the-scenes work for our YouTube channel — editing, uploading, tweaking sound, and making sure the footage we thought we captured isn’t just wind noise and shaky hands.
He also helps film when Amanda’s in front of the camera. His specialty?
Holding the phone while asking, “Do you want it vertical or cinematic or…?” followed by, “Wait, it didn’t record.”
🗓 We Plan (Sort Of)
We try to loosely plan our content each week. “Let’s share this campground on Tuesday.” “Let’s post a ‘day in the life’ reel on Friday.” “Let’s do a Sunday Q&A.”
But then life happens.
We blow a fuse.
The sky opens up mid-filming.
We get caught up talking to a neighbor and forget we were filming lunch.
So we adjust. We post late. We film at golden hour. We attempt voiceovers when it’s too windy to hear anything.
Social media in RV life is 50% planning and 50% improv.
🧠 It’s Work — But It’s Good Work
Social media isn’t our full-time job — but it’s a big part of what we do. It helps us:
-
Connect with amazing people like you
-
Share real stories from the road
-
Grow our personal brands (Craftin’ Wife’s Creations & ShadowWolf Studios)
-
Keep family and friends updated in the most stylish way possible
And maybe, someday, it’ll help keep us on the road for the long haul.
💡 The Best Part?
Even when it’s messy, unpredictable, and totally unfiltered…
we get to tell our story — our way.
And that makes all the bloopers worth it.
📍Currently filming: Somewhere between a crooked tripod, a nosy squirrel, and a propane stove that just ran out mid-shot.
