Roadside Oddities of the Year: Our Favorite Finds of 2025

“Roadside Oddities of the Year: Our Favorite Finds of 2025”

2025 was full of backroads, quirky stops, and little surprises tucked into towns and landscapes across the Midwest and Appalachia. From Indiana cornfields to the hills of Tennessee and Kentucky, we chased scenic views, unique attractions, and small-town charm. Here’s our roundup of the most memorable stops this year.

1. Kankakee, IL – Bison Viewing at Kankakee Sands
One of our favorite stops this year was the Kankakee Sands preserve. Seeing bison roaming freely across the tallgrass prairie was unforgettable. The wide-open vistas made us feel like we had stepped back in time, and the wildlife viewing trails are perfect for a quiet morning hike.

2. DeMotte & Roselawn, IN – Prairie Trails & Windmill Views
In northwest Indiana, we loved wandering along the prairie trails near DeMotte and Roselawn. The small-town charm and old-fashioned windmills made for peaceful stops, perfect for stretching our legs and snapping photos.

3. Lake Village & Surrounding Areas, IN – Winfield Creek Scenic Overlook
A quiet hidden gem, the Lake Village area offered gentle walking trails and scenic overlooks. We enjoyed watching local birds and snapping some photos of wildflowers along the way—perfect for a mid-trip picnic.

4. Athens, IN – Patoka Lake & Visitors Center
Athens provided a gorgeous natural stop with Patoka Lake. We loved taking a short walk along the lake’s edge and checking out the visitor center, which had great info on local wildlife and a few hiking suggestions for future trips.

5. Northeast Ohio – Cuyahoga Valley National Park
A classic but still magical! Hiking along the Towpath Trail and seeing the Brandywine Falls never gets old. We especially enjoyed spotting wildlife and the mix of historical landmarks and nature in one park.

6. Northeast Tennessee – Obed Wild & Scenic River
This area offered gorgeous river views and some easy hiking trails perfect for a late-summer afternoon. The cliffs, rock formations, and quiet riverside spots made us wish we had more time to explore.

7. Middlesboro & Corbin, KY – Cumberland Gap & Model Train Museum
Cumberland Gap never disappoints—endless views and historic charm. We also stumbled into a small, local model train museum in Corbin, which was surprisingly detailed and fun for a quick stop.

Bonus Mentions:

  • Bison at Chain O’Lakes in Indiana for another wildlife stop.

  • Amish farm stands in NE Ohio, perfect for fresh pies and jams.

  • Local murals and historic markers in small Kentucky towns, which added character to every drive.

This year reminded us that the best roadside oddities don’t have to be outrageous—they can be quiet, beautiful, and completely unexpected. From bison to waterfalls to tiny local museums, 2025’s discoveries made every mile of the journey worthwhile.

Here’s to more hidden gems in 2026!
