Our Favorite Places 2024
Hey Y'all!
As we've mentioned before we were fortunate to experience so many places/things in 2024. There were only a small handful of things we didn't like. Here's some of our favorites.
Tours:
We were pleasantly surprised with the size of our ice creams at the end of this tour! It was very neat to learn the history of the company and the Mayfield family. Our favorite part though, was seeing the packaging, and the milk jugs being made.
The tour of the house was fantastic, and the grounds are massive. We spent the better part of the morning here, ate lunch, then went to Carter House. (That was neat too, but not near as informative.) We could have easily done the day here alone, exploring the grounds. Our tour guide for the house was clearly a history buff, and did a great job of telling the history of the house, the families, and the Civil War battle that happened almost in their back yard. We've done enough of the tours in Franklin to say if you can only do one, it should be this one.
Campgrounds:
Cowford Campground Athens, AL
You couldn't beat that view, anytime of day. Plus it was clean, quiet, and just so peaceful.
David Crocket Birthplace State Park Limestone, TN (Pre-Helene)
We had a lot of fun here! It was hot, hot, hot the entire time, so we spent a good bit of time in the Nolichucky River. The beach there was great, we love an easy sand entry. The water was flowing, but nothing to swift, and it was so clear! Very nice river access here.
Outside Inn Santee, SC
Outside Inn offers farm tours, a trail system that is very well marked, a communal area with seating, a large fire pit, and various outdoor games. The animals are all friendly and love attention!
The Bath house has 2 full bathrooms, 2 half baths, and laundry.
Museums:
Alabama Veterans Museum Athens, AL
We really enjoyed our tour, and our veteran guide. He was a wealth of knowledge about the various pieces in the museum. Our favorite, aside from the tour itself, was probably the assortment of vehicles outside.
BMW Zentrum Greer, SC
Even though neither of us are big BMW fans we had a lot of fun touring the plant, and museum. Lots of neat BMW's to see and the museum is FREE!
State Park:
Mentioned above!
Santee State Park Santee, SC
We loved the trails, the lake & the armadillo!
Experience:
Watching the Eclipse Rockport, IN
The slow fade to darkness, and immediate drop in temperature were creepy- but awesome to experience. And then after just a minute, that felt like seconds, it was getting light (and warmer) again. The back to brightness seemed to take far less time then the beginning of the eclipse to darkness.
Our First Thanksgiving #vanlife
We had fantastic weather in SC and were able to prepare and eat our meal right at our camp site.
Restaurant:
The first KFC Corbin, KY
Neither of us are big on KFC, except those mashed potatoes and gravy, and it wasn't a go-to for either of our families growing up. But it was on the way, and we had never stopped before, so we thought why not? I'm glad we did. It was cool, and we both had fun looking at all the old ads, and other memorabilia.
Pretty much every place we ate in SC, from true BBQ, Stuffed Pizza (not to be confused with stuffed crust), Brazilian Food, lovely little small town diners, authentic Mexican. It's impossible to pick a second favorite.
Wildlife:
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Decatur, AL
We went out to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge not really knowing what we'd see as neither of us had ever been to a wildlife refuge before. So we planned to just walk one of the trails. We ended up spending the entire day. The visitors center is full of interactive displays, a gift shop, maps, and a short film. We then went on one of the trails where we saw frogs, and snapping turtles. From the various viewing places (one of which was two stories, and we spent over an hour in there) we saw all types of waterfowl, snakes, other birds, and so many more plants and animals.
Harrison Bay State Park Harrison, TN
Snakes, birds, racoons, chipmunks, deer, waterfowl, squirrel, cicadas, and all kinds of insects. Most memorable here was probably when hiking, and Amanda almost stepped right on a snake!
Other Favorites:
KOA Christmas in July Baileyton, TN
So many fun activities. This KOA was small, but didn't lack in amenities! They had more than enough for us to do on our weekend there from swimming, golf, fishing, games, rentable bikes, and so many daily activities!
Horse & Carriage Lights Tour Woodruff, SC
This is one of those Facebook events finds. So glad we did it, it was a neat way to see a small town. We both really enjoyed the lights, and our guide was a lot of fun.
There are so many more we could mention, we really had a lot of new experiences in 2024!
